Canadian organizations have had the option to store their data on Canadian soil in Microsoft’s two Canadian datacentres since May 10, 2016.
We recently shared the following reminder with our Office 365 clients who expressed interested in moving their tenancy to the new Canadian Office 365 data centers:
Canadians have until October 31, 2016 to opt-in to have Microsoft move their data to Microsoft’s new Canadian Office 365 data centers.
If you choose this option, the migration of your data will be free as Microsoft will do the work for you.
The only way to move your data over after October 31st will be to spin up a new tenancy and run your own migration project, which will require time and money.
How hard is it to opt-in? It’s one-click simple to switch your data residency option and get in the queue.
Should I opt-in? If you don’t have to, you don’t need to.
Does this apply to me? It’s only important for organizations that have data residency requirements (i.e. organizations subject to FIPPA).
How long will it take to get my electronic data on Canadian soil? Microsoft is stating that the move will happen within the next two years.
What if I can’t wait that long? You can spin up a new tenancy and run your own migration project. We’d be happy to help get it working for you.
