In 2016, itgroove was approached by the Ministry of Finance to create the user interface for two touch screen kiosks. One kiosk honours each of the recipients of both the Order of British Columbia and the British Columbia Medal of Good Citizenship. The other kiosk catalogued all of the Royal Tours to British Columbia.
The reason we were chosen for the task was because the client knew we had experience making friendly, responsive user experiences. We had not previously built a touch screen kiosk, so the project was the perfect mix of challenge and familiarity.
We set to work on the Honours kiosk by manually copying over the recipients and their information from the Medal of Good Citizenship and Order of British Columbia to our content management system – in this case, WordPress.
Next, we used React, Node JS, and the WordPress REST API to power the front end and style the data that we were pulling from WordPress. We designed the kiosks to be responsive if needed, though right now they remain inside the kiosks.
If you want to see, touch, and play with the touch screen kiosks we worked on, head over to the the British Columbia Legislature in Victoria, BC, Canada. You can use them to look through the recipients of the Order of British Columbia and the British Columbia Medal of Good Citizenship, or learn about the Royal Tours in British Columbia.
We’re very honoured to have been a part of this project, and proud of our work. We even mentioned these touch screen kiosks in our January Newsletter!
